Seeding of 2017

This project involves, seeding hundreds of species of plants across hundreds of acres within Northern California. Our main effort is to largely increase the regional bio-diversity. Our secondary efforts involve: establishing a living seed bank, and lastly; developing potential commercial crops as well as alternative, commercial cropping methods. The vast majority of these species have been freshly sourced through commercial vendors. The remaining species have been sourced from our local environment, the United States NPGS, among others. Many species have a limited genetic base, resulting from singular sourcing of the seed and low seed quantities. In these cases, some statistical data will not be nearly as accurate as bulk-stocked species from several sources. Although detailed reporting will still be carried out and presented on all species to the best of our abilities. Plants within all taxa will be studied, with respect to different growing environments they are to sprout in. Our focus is on drought and flood tolerances, fertile and infertile tolerances, heat and cold tolerances, light and shade tolerances, as well as edibility, growth rate, survival rate, animal influence and other lesser details. Various individual reports will be formally published at the end of this year (around december of 2017). As well as a complete summary of the entire project.

DETAILS:

Smaller quantities of certain species are direct seeded by hand, in most cases inoculated with endomycorrhizal fungi. bulk quantity species have been broadcast by hand, in most cases using seed ball techniques, with various inoculated clay-based mixtures to support proper seed germination. For all species, seeding locations are carefully determined by their native conditions and sown within one, but usually two or three basic environments (i.e. riparian, hot/dry ridge, cool/moist valley…). Special attention is being focused upon several dozen tropical and sub-tropical species in order to catalyze adaptation to our regional climate (mainly: avocado, anonna sp., passionfruit, citrus sp., himalayan olive, moringa, date palm, and musa sp.). Most tree seeds are treated with hot water and/or scarified individually by hand. All seed has been cold stratified where needed or beneficial. Cuttings are directly sown and treated with endomycorrhizal fungi and raw honey.

NOTE: Foreign plant species are sown on private land to be under easy monitor. Potentially invasive plants to our local climate have been sown within a handicapped location for observation (head point of a valley situated perpendicular to a crotched ridge line, surrounded by mature native forest in every direction, 100+ meters from the nearest waterway). California-native plant species are sown on public, wild lands where appropriate (typically within clearly eroded areas).

WE ONLY USE NON-GMO SEEDS AND ORGANIC METHODS.
