Lungs of Fruit – Ecology
Pluvia Semini, a project nicknamed ‘Lungs of Fruit’ involves widespread seeding of native trees across public and private lands. Pluvia Semini (‘seed rain’) is short for seminalem pluviam which is latin for ‘seeded rain’. This is exactly what we’re after. Pluvia Semini aims to improve California’s environment to the degree of permanently increasing annual rainfall.
We are based in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of Northern California. Pluvia Semini employs hundreds of plant species throughout thousands of acres of nevada county. During the fall we broadcast our seed directly to the land. Preserving the plants pristine tap-root, to be far more tolerant of drought and other stressors. Our chosen native tree species for each climate require zero irrigation, and no maintenance in general after seeding.
The seed we use is completely clean and vital. We never use or provide seed that is: chemically treated, genetically modified, hybridized, or infertile/old. It is always freshly sourced and organically prepared with a simple mixture of benefical microbes. As well as an over-wintering crust that is made of azomite, clay, sand and coconut coir (similar in function to a traditional seedball). This protects the seed from drying out, as well as locking up the microbial spores until germination in spring.

The foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s are an ideal location for cleaning up atmospheric pollution spread from the valley. The foothills receive above average (U.S. avg.) rainfall while sustaining a very long and hot summer. Pluvia Semini is laying the groundwork and catalyzing a green belt running up and down California. Following our immediate afforestation, the Sierra Foothills will begin to function more and more like lungs. Cleaning up vast volumes of air, while providing highly sustainable sources of food, medicine and other useful materials.

We collect, stock and supply seed for all the worlds ways, be it: cool to cold climates, warm temperate, sub-tropical, mediterranean, tropical and arid to semi-arid. Wherever you are in the world, we will completely customize your seeds to be native and non-invasive within your local climate.
THE SITUATION AND THE POTENTIAL
California’s drought has claimed well over 70 million trees, from drought-induced bark beetle infestations. In many communities of the central and southern Sierra Nevada range, “80 percent of trees are dead,” said Ken Pimlott, the state’s top forester as director of Cal Fire, the state forestry and fire-protection agency. “There will be no conifers when this is done.” But the current convergence of drought, bark beetles and oak disease is changing ecosystems enough that scientists cannot say when the tree population might be restored.
Our project centers around ground-zero of the California gold rush. The vast destruction of the Sierra’s watershed during the mid 1800s has removed key hydraulic features of benefit. Miners would remove and pile up cobble and boulder on the stream-side, while proceeding to ‘process’ and wash away the remaining sand and silt. In a lot of cases, water cannons were used to wash away hundreds of tons of earth. Basically these waterways have been stripped down to a skeletal stature, crushing the local habitat. ‘Creek beds’ are frequently reduced to smooth ‘V’ or ‘U’ shaped mini-valleys of bedrock (hydrologically-analogous to, removing the plug from a bathtub). With California in need of a bath, our resources within Pluvia Semini have been targeting the re-establishment of this bath ‘plug’. Considering over sixty percent of water used by Californians, drains from the west slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Grass-root efforts are imperative to kickstart swift and permanent remediation. There is immense water resources waiting to be captured with long-term projects like this one.
Our first step is to replace the previously removed boulder, returning roughness and stability to the water channels. We have seen exceptional results repairing channels with consecutive check-dams, essentially terracing the water flow. Check-dams are used as speed bumps, usually made of boulders stacked across a channel in various ways. These efforts immediately provide a softened seasonal drought.
Our secondary goal is to increase regional precipitation + condensation by at least 10% within 12 years. Goal date: 11/ 1/ 2028. This will be done with very specific efforts towards watershed management to support the young trees as they establish. The maturation of these trees around our deadline, combined with over a decade of waterway restoration. We expect to see substantial benefit to our regional water cycle, and clear improvements in wildlife activity and biodiversity.
Pluvia Semini volunteers and team members live on site, directly within the project. Working in the forest with our primary tools being: soil, seed and rain. Our current infrastructure is lightweight and highly efficient. All funding and support is directly translated into pounds of seed and quantity of check dams, with very little collateral, and zero delay. Past projects have displayed: 80% of funding, directly purchases wholesale seed (organic, non-gmo, non-hybridized, freshly sourced seed); 15%, funds the implementation of low-profile, creek repairs (brush layering and check dams); remaining 5% provides essential tools and other supports: rain gauges, buckets, inoculants, thermometers, seed processing and handling… Etc..
Evolutionary Master Plan (in progress) : Our master plan is a template for stewarded forest succession, catering to public and private interests. This allows local or regional groups to design sustainable management of critical resources (i.e. timber locales, wildlife conservancies, wild pasture, livestock fodder, wind breaks…).
PHASE #1 Seed Dispersal (2016 to 2020)
Input: large-scale seeding (native trees, meadow building, shrubs/herbs/vines)
Output: Increased wildlife food, softened drought period.
PHASE #2 Watershed Management (2016 to 2028)
Input: Low-profile regional earthworks to recover destroyed waterways, and stabilize watersheds.
Output: Shortened seasonal drought, maturing – living, seed library.
PHASE #3 Guided Stewardship (2017 – 2028)
Input: Selective forest thinning (dead/diseased plant material). Potential adjustments to the ecological template.
Output: The natural maturation of permanent seed dispersal pathways (waterways, wind, birds, insects, rodents, and other mammals).
PHASE #4 Finishing Touch (2025 – 2028)
Input: Addition of new support species.
Output: Stabilized ecosystem patterns/cycles.
PHASE #5 Maturity (2028 beyond)
Input: Evolutionary Master Plan.
Output: Food, medicine and materials, maturing to full production. Substantial increase in wildlife density and diversity. Appreciation.
We advise to only spread seeds on your land, or land that you have a legal right or formal invitation to seed. Various plant species are labeled for varying degrees of invasiveness relative to certain climates (check your local environmental agency to find yours). In most cases this means, that these species may cause substantial or even permanent disruptions within your local ecosystem. In our experience it is preferable to seed any plants which may be invasive, at least 100 meters (109 yards) from water channels. It is also recommended to broadcast potentially invasive species where the plants will be encircled and contained by immediate native forest.

Risks and challenges
Seed availabilty will fluctuate with crop failures and other unknown factors. If their are delays for seed of certain species we offer you the choice to change species or wait for new seed to come in. If these challenges arise we will be in constant contact to settle on a fair exchange.
